My Prediction:

Within 3 years, we'll see widespread AI voice cloning in pretexting attacks. Within 5 years, deepfake video will be common enough that video calls won't be reliable verification methods.

The defense isn't better AI detection (though that helps). The defense is assuming that all remote communication can be faked and implementing verification procedures that don't rely on recognizing voices, faces, or writing styles.

The New Verification Standard:

  • Something you know: Shared secret or code phrase established in person

  • Something you have: Physical callback to verified number from verified directory

  • Someone else verifies: Multi-party authorization for high-risk actions

One bank I'm working with is implementing a "daily code word" system. Each morning, senior executives receive a unique code word. Any unusual request must include that code word. The code word is delivered via separate channel (physical security badge display, for example) so it can't be intercepted through compromised email or phone.

It's old-school spy tradecraft. And it works.
