CIS Controls for Risk Management
The Center for Internet Security (CIS) provides a set of CIS Controls—a prioritized set of cybersecurity best practices designed to help organizations protect their information systems. Originally focused on addressing basic security needs, the CIS Controls have evolved into a comprehensive framework for managing cybersecurity risks.
There are 18 CIS Controls, grouped into three categories:
- Basic Controls (1-6): These focus on foundational security measures such as inventory control, secure configurations, and continuous vulnerability management.
- Foundational Controls (7-16): These controls address areas such as access management, monitoring, incident response, and penetration testing.
- Organizational Controls (17-18): These focus on governance, risk management processes, and incident response planning.
By following the CIS Controls, organizations can take a proactive approach to cybersecurity, focusing on critical areas of vulnerability and implementing a risk-based strategy to protect their systems.
