Introduction to Key Management
Cryptographic key management refers to the processes and practices involved in handling cryptographic keys throughout their lifecycle. Keys are the foundation of any cryptographic system, and their security is critical to maintaining the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of encrypted data. Effective key management ensures that keys are created, distributed, stored, used, and retired securely.
Key management is a cornerstone of cryptography because, regardless of how secure a cryptographic algorithm is, improper handling of keys can compromise the entire system. For example, if a key is exposed or stolen, an attacker can decrypt sensitive information, rendering encryption useless.
